What beautiful weather we have experienced this week. As I walked both on East and West the last couple of days there were students enjoying the opportunity to study outside in every nook and cranny of the campus. I was definitely tempted to crawl under a tree with a good book, but made my way to the next meeting instead. For this lover of the great outdoors, there is something very special this time of year. I relish the chill of walking to the car each morning followed by the warm sunshine of the afternoon. Congratulations – Professor of Child Development, Cheryl Williams-Jackson will receive her Doctor of Psychology degree this weekend from the American School of Professional Psychology. During her 2012/13 sabbatical, Cheryl completed the extensive clinical practice required for her doctorate. Congratulations to Cheryl! Celebrate – I lost a friend this week to cancer. While it has left me melancholy and a bit disconnected, it also serves to put things into perspective. Today, I am reminded of the importance of celebrating what we do well, so I’m sharing some of the excellence I experience at MJC. · Faculty evaluation – Both the self-evaluations and peer evaluations that I have read demonstrate a thoughtful, thorough evaluation of teaching that affirms strengths and provides suggestion for growth. These are exceptionally well done. · Maintenance and repair – While we enjoy many beautiful new buildings, we also have aging facilities. Our maintenance and custodial staff do an amazing job of keeping even our oldest facilities in good repair, safe, and clean. I’m especially proud of the cleanliness maintained in our restrooms – these are high use facilities! · Collaboration – I see the positive results of staff, faculty, and administrators working collaboratively and cooperatively on a daily basis. We are especially good at assisting when an area is temporarily short staffed and solution seeking. · Students helping students – Opening doors, providing advice, making referrals, and affirming ideas are a few of the ways that I see students assisting one another. When you see excellence today, I hope you’ll take a minute to acknowledge it and celebrate! We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence. Martin Luther King, Jr. Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected. Steve Jobs The Executive Council will be meeting next Wednesday October 23rd, 2013 at 12:00pm in the East Campus Student Senate Office. The agenda may be found here. October 7, 2013 Contact: Lynette Borelli-Glidewell Professor of Theatre Arts (209) 575-6621 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC Theatre presents Frankenstein, a classic tale of horror and suspense (Modesto, CA) –The Modesto Junior College Theatre Department will stage the play Frankenstein by Victor Gianlanella beginning October 24 with a Student Preview Night at 7:30 p.m., a special Halloween Show on Oct. 31 at 10 p.m., (includes a costume contest at 9 p.m.), regular performances held Oct. 25, Oct. 26, November 1 and Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee performance on Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Auditorium on East Campus. The play Frankenstein is a classic tale of horror and suspense that details the ill-fated experiments of Victor Frankenstein as he attempts to fathom the secrets of life and death. Purchasing cadavers from two unsavory grave robbers, he gives life to a creature both hideous and touching. Adhering more closely to the original Mary Shelley novel than did the famous motion picture versions, the play blends moments of humor, philosophy and terror and questions morality and the dangers of unrestrained scientific inquiry. Sean Trew will play Victor Frankenstein in the MJC production, with Jon Cates as Henry Clerval, Marc Pratt in the role of The Creature and Rachel Pearre as Elizabeth. The MJC production is directed by Professor Lynette Borrelli-Glidewell. Tickets for the Student Preview Night are $5 for students, and all other performances are $8 for students and seniors and $10 general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the Auditorium Box Office, Tuesday through Friday, 12 noon to 5 p.m., or by calling the Box Office at 575-6776 during these hours. After many years without any family weddings, we celebrated two in the last two weeks. My husband and I each come from small families so we are well connected across generations and distant cousins. My first cousin was married two weeks ago and my sons considered the young 30’s guests to be an “old crowd.” Last weekend we all travelled to Texas, requiring four vehicles parked at two airports, for my niece’s wedding. Cameron and Sam thoroughly enjoyed the Texas A&M experience of an Aggie wedding attended by many, many recent grads. It is the first wedding reception I’ve attended where the crowd sang the college fight song at midnight. Wow, they really have a handle on alumni relations. We had an incredible time visiting with family and new friends and returned exhausted, happy, and ready to get back to work where 30 is very young. Jillian was warmly welcomed by the deans in President’s Cabinet at her first official administrator’s meeting. Congratulations James on this recognition of your leadership and opportunity to serve at the state level! Returning artists include Francisco Franco, Greg Gandy, Carson Grubaugh, Cynthia Horn, Nicholas Milinazzo, Jay Scantling and Mary Scheinuck. These alumni earned Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts degrees from a range of institutions including (respectively) the New York Art Academy, New York City; the Academy of Art, San Francisco; the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; the University of California, Davis; Radford University, Radford, Virginia; the University of California, Santa Cruz; and John F. Kennedy University, Berkeley, CA. The artists’ range of style and content runs from non-objective, to symbolic, hyper-realistic, abstraction, introspective, and psychoanalytical, and includes oil, acrylic, sculpture, and video. “I am personally very excited by this exhibition, as every one of these artists was a student in my classes and it has been a pleasure after having encouraged their dreams to watch them develop their own personal styles and attitudes as their education and careers have progressed,” said Serros.
