The show is free and the Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A reception with the artists and members of the Visual Arts Club will be held on Thursday, October 17, 5 to 8 p.m. at the Gallery. The artists will be introduced at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to come learn what has inspired the former MJC students to go on to study art at the graduate level and beyond. These former students, some of whom show nationally, make a living as practicing artists, or teach at the college level, will be presenting a panel discussion in the MJC Performing Arts Center - Room 222, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. prior to the reception. The panel will discuss the progression of their education and careers, give insight into their styles and works, and pass on advice about the art domain. Refreshments will be served at the reception. “We believe this is MJC’s first alumni group art exhibit ever and it continues this year’s theme celebrating MJC’s history and connection to our community,” said Richard Serros, MJC professor of art. Returning artists include Francisco Franco, Greg Gandy, Carson Grubaugh, Cynthia Horn, Nicholas Milinazzo, Jay Scantling and Mary Scheinuck. These alumni earned Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts degrees from a range of institutions including (respectively) the New York Art Academy, New York City; the Academy of Art, San Francisco; the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; the University of California, Davis; Radford University, Radford, Virginia; the University of California, Santa Cruz; and John F. Kennedy University, Berkeley, CA. The artists’ range of style and content runs from non-objective, to symbolic, hyper-realistic, abstraction, introspective, and psychoanalytical, and includes oil, acrylic, sculpture, and video. “I am personally very excited by this exhibition, as every one of these artists was a student in my classes and it has been a pleasure after having encouraged their dreams to watch them develop their own personal styles and attitudes as their education and careers have progressed,” said Serros.
