In The Meth Epidemic, Frontline investigates the story behind a drug that ravages individuals, families, and communities. The film reveals how rates of meth addiction can fluctuate depending on the available channels for obtaining essential ingredients of meth—ephedrine and pseudoephedrine—which are sold legally in products such as cold remedies but are regulated differently in various states. After the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring Chris Adams, a local police officer in the narcotics division, and Charles Yarnell, who works in Stanislaus County’s Behavioral Health and Recovery Services. Selected students are encouraged to study mathematics, science, engineering and computer science by interacting with engineers at different NASA centers. The project includes preliminary interactive Web-based activities and an onsite experience during the fall or spring at NASA (either Johnson Space Center, Marshall Space Flight Center, or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Students from across the nation are chosen to participate through a competitive process. Selected students are U.S. citizens currently pursuing their initial undergraduate degree at a community college who have an interest and aptitude for mathematics, science, engineering or computer science. |
