Claudia Ramirez MJC Career Development and Transfer Center [email protected] 209-575-6698 PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC hosts 30th Annual Hispanic Education Conference (Modesto, CA) – The Modesto Junior College Hispanic Education Conference will take place on Saturday, March 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus, 435 College Avenue in Modesto. The purpose of the free conference is to expose Hispanic high school students to higher education, to a variety of occupations, and to motivate the youth to aspire to a successful academic life and career preparation. The theme for this year’s conference is “30 Years of Excellence! Educating Future Leaders.” Students will attend career workshops presented by Hispanic professionals, including workshops on CSU admission requirements; MJC admissions; how to prepare and deliver a speech without stress; politics-community-family; staying out of gangs and staying in school, and careers in K-12 education. Approximately 800 participants are expected to attend. The keynote speaker will be MJC alumna Tamara Mena a motivation speaker, host, spokesperson, product representative, and self-proclaimed “eternal optimist.” Born and raised in Mexico, Mena immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 13. At the age of 19, she suffered a horrific car accident that left her paralyzed from the mid-chest down and, unfortunately, killed her boyfriend. After surviving a near death experience, Mena chose to dedicate her life to sharing a message of hope and motivating people to believe in themselves. Despite the great tragedy she endured, she never lost sight of her goals. Mena retook her studies, graduated with honors from Modesto Junior College in April 2008, achieving an Associate of Arts in Transfer Studies, and transferred to California State University Stanislaus, where she majored in Communications Studies, graduating with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude. Mena has been a guest speaker at numerous events and conferences. She has been featured on several English and Spanish-speaking TV shows, as well as international shows, including Sabado Gigante, The Doctors and El Hormiguero. Her desire to break down barriers motivated Mena to participate on the reality TV show, Nuestra Belleza Latina. As the first woman in a wheelchair to be selected to participate on the show, her appearance garnered the attention of a large number of viewers. Through appearances and speaking engagements Mena has shared her story and determination to succeed with millions of people. Registration for the Hispanic Education Conference is free and a registration form can be downloaded from the websitewww.mjc.edu/HEC. Contact: Lorena Dorn Dean of Counseling & Student Services Modesto Junior College (209) 575- 6032 [email protected] PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release MJC hosts New Student Saturdays to enroll high school seniors (Modesto, CA) – Modesto Junior College will host two “New Student Saturdays” this spring to enroll high school seniors. The events will be held on March 8 and April 12 with sessions beginning at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. in the Main Auditorium of the Performing and Media Arts Center on East Campus. No pre-registration is required, and attendance and campus parking are free. Each Saturday event will have both morning and afternoon sessions and offer high school seniors the opportunity to gain a priority registration appointment for fall classes by completing the steps of application, orientation, assessment and educational advising all in one day. There will also be sessions during the two Saturdays that will show new students how to use PiratesNet to search the class schedule, set up fall classes and access their student email. Special sessions for parents will provide information and the opportunity for them to ask questions. Financial Aid representatives will be on hand to assist students in filling out the FAFSA form. Students will receive priority registration appointments for fall 2014 in late April, and registration for MJC’s fall classes begins on May 5. MJC’s New Student Saturdays will assist incoming students in completing all the steps necessary prior to the deadline for the assignment of priority registration appointments. New statewide regulations require that students be fully matriculated in order to receive priority registration. The mandatory services for students to be considered fully matriculated include application, orientation, assessment (testing for placement in math, reading, and English classes) and advising with completion of an abbreviated, one semester educational plan. High school seniors are invited to get started on the enrollment process before attending one of the New Student Saturdays by filling out an online application in advance. Online applications are available by visiting www.mjc.edu and clicking on the “Apply for Admission” button on the right side of the webpage. MJC is also visiting area high schools to assist high school seniors to begin the process of enrolling and gaining a priority registration appointment. Students who have already completed an application, orientation, and assessment before arriving at one of the New Student Saturdays will be able to go directly to the final step, educational advising. “Attending a New Student Saturday is one of the best ways for high school seniors to get their college education off to a great start,” said Lorena Dorn, Dean of Counseling and Student Services at MJC. “Prospective students should take advantage of this opportunity to get ahead and get the classes they need at MJC next fall.” For more information on New Student Saturdays or enrolling at MJC call (209) 575-6789. -MJC- Modesto Junior College: www.mjc.edu Follow MJC on Facebook: www.facebook.com/modestojuniorcollege Associated Students of Modesto Junior College
